Cheddar Gorge is one of Britains most dramatic natural showpieces with towering limestone cliffs that soar to 450 feet in height - almost 3 times that of Nelsons column in London - and were probably cut by a stream which now runs underground. The finest views of the gorge are obtained by approaching from the north. There are more than 400 holes or caves in the area, and in the larger ones visitors can see stalactites and stalagmites rich in colour and fantastic of shape.

Cheddar cheese originated here more than 300 years ago. Today it is made in more places throughout the world than any other cheese. Cheddar gorge is also the only place where the rare Cheddar pink grows wild. It was a favourite of Victorian tourists to Cheddar, which accounts for its rarity today. The sweetly scented flowers grow from a cluster of delicate leaves and usually bloom in June or July.
